The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) is the most notorious electrical component on 2007-2016 Jeep vehicles. It is a central relay and fuse module mounted under the hood that controls the fuel pump, wipers, horn, power windows, door locks, turn signals, headlights, and several other circuits. Chrysler consolidated all of these functions into one module to simplify wiring. The unintended consequence is that when the TIPM fails, multiple unrelated systems can stop working or behave erratically. NHTSA has received over 4,500 complaints related to TIPM failures.
The fuel pump relay is the most common and most dangerous TIPM failure. The internal relay contacts wear, corrode, or develop cold solder joints. When the relay fails open, the fuel pump does not run and the engine will not start. When it fails intermittently, the engine stalls without warning at any speed — a safety hazard that prompted NHTSA Recall 14V-302 covering 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee WK2 and 2012 Wrangler JK models. The recall fix was a TIPM replacement, but aftermarket fuel pump relay bypass kits provide a permanent fix for the fuel pump circuit specifically.
Wiper relay failures cause wipers to run at full speed with the switch off, run at the wrong intermittent speed, or not work at all. The wiper relay is internal to the TIPM and cannot be individually bypassed like the fuel pump relay — it shares timing circuits with the intermittent wiper function. Horn relay failures cause random honking, often triggered by heat. Power window relay failures cause windows to stop working or move slowly. Each of these is a separate relay circuit inside the TIPM, but all share the same printed circuit board.
The root cause is a combination of relay design, thermal cycling, and printed circuit board solder joint fatigue. The TIPM sits in the engine compartment where it experiences temperature swings from ambient to 200°F from engine heat. Internal relay contacts expand and contract with temperature, eventually creating intermittent connections. The solder joints on the relay circuit board fatigue over thousands of thermal cycles. Hot climates and vehicles that make many short trips — frequent engine on/off thermal cycles — see higher TIPM failure rates.
Repair options depend on how many circuits have failed. For a single fuel pump relay failure, a relay bypass kit is the most cost-effective permanent fix — it wires the fuel pump to a new relay mounted outside the TIPM, removing the failed circuit from the power path entirely. For multiple circuit failures — fuel pump plus wipers, or horn plus windows — the entire TIPM should be replaced. Remanufactured TIPMs with rebuilt relay circuits offer a middle ground between a bypass kit and a new unit.
TIPM replacement requires programming to the vehicle's VIN and security system. Without proper programming, the immobilizer will not recognize the new module and the vehicle will not start. We handle the programming as part of the replacement. Call (707) 584-7727 if your 2007-2016 Jeep has electrical gremlins — we can test each TIPM circuit and tell you exactly which relay has failed.
Common Jeep TIPM Repair Problems We Fix
Engine cranks but will not start — no fuel pump prime
The fuel pump relay inside the TIPM has failed in the open position, cutting power to the fuel pump. With the key in the ON position, you should hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds. Silence confirms no power to the pump. We verify by testing power at the fuel pump connector and TIPM relay output. NHTSA Recall 14V-302 covers this failure on 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee and 2012 Wrangler. Fix is a fuel pump relay bypass kit or TIPM replacement.
Wipers running on their own with the switch off
The wiper relay circuit inside the TIPM has shorted, sending voltage to the wiper motor regardless of switch position. This is a separate circuit from the fuel pump relay. The wiper relay cannot be individually bypassed like the fuel pump relay because it shares circuits with the intermittent timer. Fix requires TIPM replacement or remanufactured TIPM with the wiper relay circuit rebuilt. Over 4,500 NHTSA complaints reference this type of TIPM failure.
Horn honking randomly or not working at all
The horn relay is another internal TIPM circuit. A shorted relay causes random honking — often when the vehicle sits in the sun, because heat expands the relay internals and creates a false contact. A failed-open relay means the horn does not work at all. Random honking at 3 AM is a classic TIPM symptom that Jeep forums document extensively. Diagnosis requires testing the relay output at the TIPM connector.
Multiple electrical systems failing at the same time
When two or more unrelated systems fail simultaneously — for example, fuel pump plus wipers, or horn plus windows — the TIPM is almost certainly the cause. These systems share nothing except their relay control through the TIPM. Multiple circuit failures indicate the TIPM's internal printed circuit board or solder joints are degrading. Full TIPM replacement or remanufacture is the appropriate fix when multiple circuits are affected.
Intermittent stalling while driving
The TIPM fuel pump relay can fail intermittently — it works when cool but opens when hot, cutting fuel pump power mid-drive. The engine stalls without warning and may restart after cooling for 10-20 minutes. This is the most dangerous TIPM failure mode because it can cause a stall at highway speed. NHTSA flagged this specific pattern in Recall 14V-302. A fuel pump relay bypass kit permanently removes this failure mode.
