The 2007-2017 Jeep Patriot and 2007-2017 Jeep Compass are the only Jeep models equipped with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Both use the Jatco JF011E — the same CVT found in the Nissan Altima, Sentra, Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander of the same era. Chrysler branded it internally as the CVT2 or 2MBDA. It pairs with either the 2.0L World Engine or 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder. AWD models add a Power Transfer Unit behind the CVT to drive the rear wheels.
The Jatco JF011E is a belt-and-pulley CVT. Instead of gears, it uses a steel push belt running between two variable-diameter pulleys. The primary pulley connects to the engine, the secondary pulley connects to the differential. Hydraulic pressure adjusts the pulley diameters to change the ratio continuously — no shift points, no gear hunting, just a smooth acceleration curve. When it works correctly, it is one of the smoothest drivetrains available. When it wears, it whines, slips, jerks, and overheats.
Chrysler originally rated the CVT fluid as a lifetime fill — meaning they did not specify a change interval. This decision contributed to a high failure rate between 60,000 and 100,000 miles and led to a class-action settlement covering 2007-2013 Patriot and Compass models. CVT fluid shear stability degrades significantly after 30,000-40,000 miles. The belt-and-pulley interface depends on fluid film strength to maintain grip. When the fluid degrades, the belt slips, the pulleys score, and the damage compounds rapidly.
The most common failure mode is belt slipping — the engine revs rise without corresponding acceleration. Early-stage slipping sometimes responds to a fluid change because fresh fluid restores the grip at the belt-pulley interface. Once the pulley contact surfaces are scored, fluid alone cannot compensate and the CVT needs internal repair. We inspect the CVT internally before quoting to determine whether a targeted repair is viable or a full rebuild is necessary.
Heat is the CVT's primary enemy. The belt-and-pulley design generates friction continuously — there is no torque converter lockup that reduces heat at cruise speed. Sustained highway driving at 70+ mph in summer pushes fluid temperature toward the 230°F limit where rapid degradation begins. Towing, even at the rated 2,000 lb maximum, accelerates heat buildup. We install auxiliary CVT coolers on Patriot and Compass models that reduce operating temperature by 20-30°F — a meaningful life extension for the CVT.
A properly rebuilt Jatco JF011E with new belt, new pulley surfaces, refreshed valve body, and new seals is as reliable as a factory unit — more so, because the fluid change interval is now known. We use upgraded belt and pulley components where available. Call (707) 584-7727 with your Patriot or Compass year, mileage, and symptoms for a specific diagnosis.
Common Jeep Patriot & Compass CVT Problems We Fix
CVT whining noise that gets louder under acceleration
Belt and pulley wear is the most common source of CVT whining on the Jatco JF011E. The steel push belt running between variable-diameter pulleys develops wear on the contact surfaces after 60,000-80,000 miles, especially with degraded or low fluid. Early whining with good fluid level may respond to a fluid change. Persistent whining indicates the belt and pulley surfaces are worn past recovery and require internal rebuild with new belt and pulley assemblies.
CVT slipping — engine revs high but vehicle barely accelerates
CVT slipping means the belt is not maintaining grip on the pulleys. The most common cause is degraded fluid — CVT fluid shear stability drops significantly after 40,000 miles without service. If a fluid change does not restore normal operation within 100 miles of driving, the belt and pulley surfaces are damaged. The class-action settlement covering 2007-2013 Patriot and Compass CVTs was driven by this exact failure pattern.
Jerking during acceleration that feels like gear hunting
A CVT has no gears to hunt — jerking means the ratio control is failing. The Jatco JF011E uses a stepper motor and hydraulic valve body to adjust pulley diameter. When the stepper motor stalls or the valve body sticks, the pulley cannot adjust smoothly and the ratio jumps. We test the stepper motor operation and valve body pressure to determine whether the fix is electrical, hydraulic, or internal.
CVT overheating during highway driving in summer
The Jatco JF011E generates more heat than a conventional automatic because the belt-and-pulley design produces friction continuously. The factory cooler is marginal for sustained highway speeds above 70 mph in summer. CVT fluid degrades rapidly above 230°F. We install an auxiliary CVT cooler that reduces operating temperature by 20-30°F and significantly extends belt and fluid life.
Check engine light with P0868 or P0746 CVT codes
P0868 (line pressure low) and P0746 (pressure control solenoid stuck off) are the two most common CVT diagnostic codes on the Jatco JF011E. P0868 indicates the CVT cannot build enough hydraulic pressure to clamp the belt properly — usually a failing pump or severe fluid degradation. P0746 indicates a valve body solenoid fault. Both codes trigger limp mode to protect the belt from slip damage. Diagnosis determines whether the fix is a valve body replacement or a full internal rebuild.
