SH-AWD — Super Handling All-Wheel Drive — is Acura's signature driveline technology. The system can send up to 70% of engine torque to the rear axle and 100% of that rear torque to either rear wheel. A magnetic clutch pack in the rear drive unit controls torque distribution based on throttle, steering, and wheel speed inputs. It appears on MDX (2001+), TL SH-AWD (2007-2014), RL (2005-2012), ZDX, and RDX across various generations.

SH-AWD is a maintenance-critical system. The magnetic clutch pack depends on clean Acura-spec Dual Pump System Fluid (DPSF) to actuate correctly. Acura specifies service every 30,000 miles. This is one of the most-deferred Acura services we see — and one of the most expensive to skip. A $200-range fluid service every 30,000 miles prevents a $3,000+ rear drive unit rebuild down the road.

The most common SH-AWD problems are whining or growling from the rear, clunking in corners at low speed, binding during tight turns, and the VSA/SH-AWD warning light on the dash. These symptoms usually trace to low or contaminated rear differential fluid, a failed magnetic clutch pack, or a worn rear drive unit bearing. Catching these issues early means fluid service. Catching them late means rebuild.

Wrong fluid kills SH-AWD systems fast. The rear drive unit requires Acura DPSF or Honda Pro Dual Pump Fluid II — period. Generic gear oil doesn't carry the friction modifiers needed for the clutch pack to engage smoothly. Quick-lube shops and general-purpose mechanics often use the wrong fluid and destroy clutch packs within 10,000 miles. We stock Acura-spec fluid and use it every time.

SH-AWD and transmission failures are linked. When the transmission fails on an SH-AWD vehicle, metal debris migrates through shared fluid passages into the transfer case and rear drive unit. Rebuilding the transmission alone without flushing and servicing SH-AWD causes a second failure within 20,000 miles. We always service both systems together on any major repair. It's not optional.
