Professional ABS Repair & ABS Light Repair in Rohnert Park, CA

Key Takeaway: An amber ABS light on its own means anti-lock braking is switched off but your normal brakes still work, so book a check soon and leave extra room in the rain. If the red brake warning light is on with it, stop somewhere safe and do not drive on. The common causes AutoZone lists sit at the wheels: a wheel speed sensor, its wiring, a damaged tone or encoder ring, or a worn wheel bearing. Brake & Front End calls mechanical failures of the ABS hydraulic unit rare. A proper diagnosis reads the ABS codes and tests the parts before anything is replaced.

ABS repair starts with finding out why the ABS module switched anti-lock off. The module watches a speed sensor at every wheel. When a signal drops out or makes no sense, it stores a code and turns on the ABS light. The cause can be the sensor, its wire, the toothed or magnetic ring it reads, the wheel bearing that ring sits in, or the module and hydraulic unit themselves.

Rohnert Park Transmission & Auto Repair lists ABS diagnostics and repair on its brake service list, including ABS module testing, wheel speed sensor replacement and hydraulic control unit diagnosis. Under California law you get a written estimate listing the parts and the repair method before any work starts.

Call with the year, make and model and which lights are on, and we will tell you what your car's ABS needs. Drivers come to 305 Laguna Dr from Rohnert Park, Cotati, Penngrove, Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.

What Your ABS Light Means, and When to Stop Driving

ABS, the anti-lock braking system, watches how fast each wheel turns. When one wheel slows much faster than the others in a hard stop, the system eases the brake pressure at that wheel so it keeps turning and you can still steer (AutoZone, Standard Motor Products). When the ABS module finds a fault, it turns the light on and switches anti-lock off. What the light means depends on what else is lit:

What Causes an ABS Light: The Parts Behind It

AutoZone lists low brake fluid, worn brake pads, a blown fuse, a damaged wheel speed sensor, a damaged tone ring, loose or worn wheel bearings or hubs, and wiring problems. Several of them sit at the wheels.

1. The ABS sensor (wheel speed sensor)

Most cars have a sensor at each wheel that reads a toothed or magnetic ring turning with the hub (AutoZone notes early systems used sensors on the differential instead). Older cars use passive sensors, a magnet in a coil of wire that makes its own signal; Standard Motor Products notes they read poorly at low speed. Newer cars use active sensors that are powered by the ABS module and read accurately at low speed (Brake & Front End). HELLA says carmakers have mainly fitted active sensors since 1998, while Standard says some makers held off until 2010. HELLA lists broken wiring, internal shorts, outside damage, heavy dirt, extra wheel bearing play and a damaged encoder wheel as causes of a faulty ABS sensor signal.

2. The tone ring, encoder ring and wheel bearing

On many newer cars the sensor reads a ring of small magnets built into the seal of the wheel bearing (HELLA). Brake & Front End magazine explains that an "erratic" code can come from the relationship between that encoder ring and the sensor, not the sensor itself. AutoZone and HELLA both list a worn bearing with extra play and a damaged tone or encoder ring. When the damaged ring is part of the bearing, the fix is a wheel bearing or hub repair, not a new sensor.

3. Wiring and connectors at the wheel

AutoZone notes the wires on a wheel speed sensor at the hub are often damaged by road debris or corrosion, and ZF Aftermarket's guide says to check the wiring before changing any part.

4. The ABS module and hydraulic unit

The module is the controller, and the hydraulic unit next to it holds the valves and pump that hold, release and reapply pressure at each wheel. Brake & Front End counts eight valves on a basic four-channel ABS and 12 or more on cars with stability control. It calls mechanical failures of the unit rare, but says valves can stick from debris, corrosion or contaminated brake fluid, and a stuck or defective valve solenoid or pump can set a code.

5. Fluid, fuse and pads

Low brake fluid, a blown ABS fuse and worn pads can all bring the light on (AutoZone). AutoZone adds that a blown fuse is often a sign of a fault that still needs finding. Low fluid is a brake repair question first.

How an ABS Diagnosis Works

An ABS code tells you which wheel or circuit the module is unhappy with. Brake & Front End is blunt about it: every wheel speed sensor code is the starting point of a diagnosis and not a reason to order a part. A careful check usually runs in this order:

  1. Read the stored codes from the ABS module. The ABS computer sits on the car's data network and is read through the same diagnostic port as the engine, but the scan tool has to support the ABS system (ZF, Brake & Front End).
  2. Compare the speed signals from the individual wheels (HELLA).
  3. Test the suspect sensor the right way for its type. HELLA notes the resistance of an active sensor cannot be measured like a passive one, and Brake & Front End warns that probing an active sensor circuit with a test light can make the module shut that sensor off and point the blame at the module.
  4. Inspect the wiring, the connector, the tone or encoder ring and the wheel bearing for play (AutoZone, HELLA).
  5. If the codes point to the hydraulic unit, run its valves and pump from a scan tool with two-way control (Brake & Front End).
  6. After the repair, clear the codes and confirm the light stays out (ZF).

ABS codes are stored in the ABS module, so the scan tool has to be able to read that system.

ABS Sensor, Wiring, Bearing or Module: Which Repair Fits

Wheel speed sensor replacement

When testing shows the sensor itself has failed, it is replaced. ZF's guide describes taking out the old sensor, cleaning the spot where the new one mounts, reconnecting the harness and then clearing the codes.

Wiring or connector repair

A damaged or corroded wire is repaired and the circuit retested, as AutoZone describes. This is why the wiring gets checked before a part is ordered.

Wheel bearing or hub with an encoder ring

When the magnetic ring is part of the bearing seal and it is damaged, or the bearing has too much play, the bearing or hub assembly is what gets replaced. The sensor may be fine.

ABS module: rebuild or replace

A failed module is either replaced or sent out to a rebuilder. Mail-in rebuilders such as MASrepair describe cleaning and opening the module, repairing the electronics and testing it before shipping it back. Brake & Front End notes that control modules sometimes need re-flashing or programming during or after a repair. Call with the year, make and model and we will tell you what your car's module needs.

Bleeding the brakes after hydraulic work

If air gets into the ABS hydraulic unit, ordinary bleeding may not get it out. Brake & Front End explains that units without their own bleed screws need a scan tool to cycle the ABS valves while the brakes are bled. Even a routine brake fluid flush can leave as much as five ounces of old fluid inside the modulator unless a scan tool works the valves.

What Changes the Cost of an ABS Repair

  • Which part failed. AutoZone puts a sensor at the low end of ABS repairs and the more complex parts at the high end.
  • Programming. A replacement module may need programming (Brake & Front End).
  • Brake bleeding. Hydraulic work on ABS units without their own bleed screws needs a scan-tool bleed.
  • Other brake wear found on the way. Worn pads or low fluid are on AutoZone's list of ABS light causes too.
  • Whether it is the ABS at all. A weak battery or a blown fuse is a much smaller fix, which is why the diagnosis comes first.

Can You Drive With the ABS Light On in Sonoma County?

  • Amber ABS light only: the normal brakes work, but anti-lock and brake assist are off (Mazda). AutoZone advises against driving with the ABS light on, because the wheels can lock and the car can skid in a hard stop on a slippery road.
  • ABS light plus the red brake light: stop somewhere safe and do not drive on. Mazda's manual says to have the car towed.
  • The car pulls to one side when braking: Brake & Front End notes a valve stuck open in the hydraulic unit can cause a pull during normal braking. Have it checked before driving on.

Rain is when anti-lock earns its keep. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Santa Rosa put November at 3.25 inches of rain and December through February at 5.78 to 6.47 inches a month, against 0.01 inches in July. An ABS light that has been on since summer is worth fixing before the wet months on the 101 and the back roads to Petaluma and Sebastopol.

Check for an Open Recall First

Before paying for an ABS repair, run your VIN or license plate through NHTSA's recall search. If an open safety recall covers your car's brakes or ABS, the manufacturer is required to fix the problem. If there is no recall, call us and we will find the cause.

Your Rights in California: A Written Estimate Before Any Work

California's Bureau of Automotive Repair says a repair shop must give you a written estimate before doing any work. It must show the total for parts and labor, list the parts and state the method of repair, and the shop has to stick to those unless you agree to a change. You can ask for your old parts back if you ask before the work is done. If a rebuilt part such as a rebuilt ABS module goes in, the old one usually goes back to the supplier as a "core", and BAR notes you may have to pay the core charge to keep it.

Frequently Asked Questions About ABS Repair & ABS Light Repair

Can I still drive my car with a bad ABS sensor?

With only the amber ABS light on, the normal brakes still work. Mazda's owner's manual says the brakes function as if the car had no ABS, and brake assist is off too. What you lose is the anti-lock help in a hard stop, so AutoZone advises against putting it off: the wheels can lock and skid on a wet or loose road. If the red brake warning light is on at the same time, stop somewhere safe and do not keep driving.

What are the signs of a bad ABS sensor?

HELLA, which makes wheel speed sensors, lists the ABS warning light coming on, a stored fault code, wheels locking during braking, the ABS working when it should not, and other systems failing with it. Brake & Front End magazine adds that on newer cars a bad wheel speed sensor can also switch off stability control, driver assistance features and cruise control, so several lights may come on together.

What is the most common cause of the ABS light coming on?

AutoZone's list starts at the wheels: a damaged wheel speed sensor, a damaged tone ring, a worn wheel bearing or hub that lets the gap change, or a broken or corroded sensor wire. It also lists low brake fluid, worn brake pads and a blown fuse. The fault code points to the wheel and the type of fault, but Brake & Front End magazine stresses that the code is the start of the diagnosis, not a reason to order a part.

How do you diagnose an ABS problem?

It starts with reading the codes stored in the ABS module. That takes a scan tool that can talk to the ABS system, not only the engine computer. Then the technician compares the speed signal from each wheel, checks the sensor's power or resistance for its type, and looks at the wiring, the tone ring and the wheel bearing. If the codes point to the hydraulic unit, a scan tool that can switch its valves and pump on and off is used to test it.

Can I replace an ABS sensor myself?

On some cars it is a bolt-in part, and ZF Aftermarket's guide walks through removing the old sensor, cleaning the mounting spot and clearing the codes afterwards. AutoZone says only confident, experienced DIYers should take on ABS work, because a wrong diagnosis or a bad repair can leave the ABS not working or working when it should not. Also check the wiring first: ZF notes that wiring faults set the same light.

How do you reset the ABS light?

Fix the fault first. AutoZone says the best way to clear the light is with a scan tool, and ZF notes the light comes back if the problem is still there. AutoZone says disconnecting the battery sometimes clears it, but that does not fix the fault behind it. A light that went out on its own may be an intermittent fault.

Where is the ABS module and what does it look like?

The ABS module works with a hydraulic control unit that the brake lines run through. Brake & Front End magazine says the hydraulic control module is mounted under the hood or on a frame rail, and that inside it are the valves and a pump that hold, release and reapply brake pressure at each wheel.

How much does it cost to fix the ABS on a car?

It depends on which part failed. AutoZone puts a sensor at the low end of ABS repairs and the more complex ABS parts at the high end. A replacement ABS module may also need programming. Wiring repairs and brake bleeding with a scan tool also change the bill. We do not publish prices.
